Crowns are usually used to strengthen a tooth or improve it’s appearance.  They are most often used on teeth that are broken, fractured, worn or partially destroyed by tooth decay.  When there is no longer enough tooth to hold and support a filling, a crown is needed.  Crowns can be a cosmetic restoration made of porcelain but can also be made of metal or both, with porcelain layered over metal.  Crowns are fabricated in a dental laboratory by a certified dental technician from the unique digital impression/scan taken of the tooth and adjacent teeth.  A crown usually covers the majority of the tooth above the gum line and are “cemented” or bonded onto a tooth.
